Container Shipping 101: Choosing the Right Container for Your Cargo

Saeed Matar·6 min read·28 October 2024

Selecting the right container type is one of the most important decisions in ocean freight. The wrong choice can lead to damaged cargo, wasted space, or unnecessary costs.

Standard Dry Containers

20' General Purpose (20GP) The most common container in global trade. Internal dimensions: 5.9m x 2.35m x 2.39m (L x W x H). Max payload: ~28,000 kg. Ideal for heavy, dense cargo like machinery, chemicals, and building materials.

40' General Purpose (40GP) Double the length of a 20GP. Preferred for light, voluminous cargo. More cost-effective per CBM than two 20ft containers.

40' High Cube (40HC) Same as 40GP but 30cm taller (2.69m internal height). The go-to choice for bulky goods like furniture, garments, and electronics. The extra height makes a significant difference for palletized cargo.

Specialized Containers

Reefer Containers Temperature-controlled containers for perishables — food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals. Available in 20ft and 40ft. Require power connection at each port.

Open Top Containers No roof — ideal for cargo that's too tall to fit through a standard door, like large machinery or pipes. Loaded from the top using cranes.

Flat Rack Containers Used for oversized cargo like vehicles, boats, and industrial equipment. Collapsible sides allow loading from the sides and top.

Tips for Container Selection - Always calculate your cargo's volume (CBM) and weight before selecting - Check the weight limit — overloaded containers are a major safety risk and attract heavy fines - For break-bulk cargo, consider LCL (Less than Container Load) to share space and costs
